The carburetor restrictions at the time really favored the smaller engines, but Pettys had stuck with the big ones until this point. I believe they could run a much bigger carb on engines under 366 that year and Maurice bored the 340 out to 362. 4. The only other reason I could think of would be the leader of those laps being DQ'ed, but I don't see any evidence of that. 5. To answer your question posted: 09.07.2016 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) The first 40 laps weren't run/scored due to the 1974 energy crisis. During the early part of the '74 season, races were shortened by 10 percent. Hence, the Daytona 500 was only 450 miles, so on and so forth until the season was well under way.
