Country singer Marty Robbins finished in the Top 5 for the only time, as did Gary Bettenhausen. Earl Ross scored his best career finish before his win at Martinsville. Uniquely he scored 5 Top 5s as he finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. 2. McDuffie. Pearson gambled that the ensuing cleanup would be done in time to allow the race to finish under green and pitted for fresh rubber while Petty and second place Earl Ross stayed on the track. The race ended under caution as Pearson still finished third with only three cars on the lead lap. 4. rob posted: 08.15.2013 - 2:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Got some bad info. It was Coo Coo Marlin's blown engine that brought out the final caution. 5. Walleyewhacker posted: 02.16.2014 - 8:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) First NASCAR event I ever attended. Pearson should have won. 6. jensenators posted: 07.04.2018 - 11:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I was listening to the MRN throwback of this race. During the starting line-up, Ken Squier said that Bill Champion, and car 81 Wally Dallenbach were the alternates for the race. car 49 of GC Spencer was said to have qualified 18th. No reason was given for him not starting the race. Dick May qualified the 19 car, and there was a driver change to Henley Gray. Dean Dalton had to start at the rear of the field for changing tires after qualifying. Cars 9, 30, 06, 46, and 93 all pitted during the pace laps with engine problems. Benny Parsons gave an interview after dropping out and said his Battery went dead, which is why he dropped out. Donnie Allison said in his interview the Transmission went out. Caution 1- Lap 35-46 Car 46, Spin in turn 3, oil clean up. Caution 2- Lap 84-93 Car 54, Blown engine turn 1. Caution 3- Lap 111-116 Car 12, Blown Engine turn 3. Caution 4- Lap 135-141 Car 18, Crash turn 4. Caution 5- Lap 164-167 Car 16, Spin turn 4.
