The trick was that overall standings after each race were made by multiplying each driver's points tally with the number of races he started. Thus became possible that Richard Petty could increase his lead by finishing behind. 4. He spun on purpose and ran up the track, down the outside wall and hitched home. He hadn't paid child support or something and cops were waiting in the pits to arrest him. This was his way of avoiding it 6. Jeremy Siple posted: 12.13.2009 - 10:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Best career finish for Pee Wee Wentz. 7. Allison fell out early and subbed for Gordon until his car fell out also. 9. He actually crashed doing of all things entering the backstretch pit road. He got blinded by fumes off a blown engine and sideswiped the guardrail then clipped the pit road's outer wall and nearly spun out as he entered his pit stall clipping the inside rail in the pits in the process anyway. Vandiver tried to pop his head out the window to see but it was to no avail, thankfully he pulled it back in when he realized he was about to nail the wall. The announcer joked it was the "most expensive pit stop in history." 10. Bobby did the smart thing,as the oil pressure was running dangerously low due to the hot temps and the worn, single stage external oil pump. Bobby did not want to blow the engine and possibly crash Cecil's only car. The 3rd place finish of David Sisco was a payday that kept him going a bit longer! 14. mkl62 posted: 12.02.2014 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looks like The Lady in Black was not in a good mood that day. But she smiled on the hometown boy, though (Cale). 15. spinpsychle posted: 09.06.2015 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The audio of this race was on the classic NASCAR podcast. Late on in the race, they talked about the points. They said this race counted as $15,000 to win and $10,000 for second, and that up to this stage Petty had about $200,000 and Cale had more like $175,000. Lap money and qualifying and any other bonuses didn't count, which is what makes this year pretty much impossible to check the numbers on, but if you haven't given up on it maybe that will help you. 16. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 04.05.2016 - 1:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: complete lineup and DNQ are now available for this race. Note: Dick Skillen #78 initially qualified in 34th position was withdraw for the race due to mechanical failure. All drivers behind him in the starting grid gain one line on the lineup. Earl Brooks (from 36th position to 34, Dick Brooks (from 38th to 36th), Pee Wee Wentz (from 40th to 38th position) and Tony Bettenhausen (initially DNQ and first alternate driver) took the 40th and last position on the starting grid. Note: Dick May drove the car #64 in qualifying but Elmo Langley drove the car in the race. 17.
