Bobby Allison and David Pearson entered this race 1st and 2nd in the
points standings but, since neither of them were running the full
schedule(Allison ran 19 races and Pearson 21), they both skipped this race.

And??? That's not saying anything. This was only the third race of the
season.
Petty went on to blow everyone away by winning 13 races just like he did
here winning by 6 laps!

My 1st NASCAR race. I was 6 years old. All that I could remember was the
red/blue #43 just blowing by everyone.

Anyone know the circumstances that put Bill Champion in Walter Ballard's
car, and Ballard in Champion's?

With Allison absence Richard Petty used this victory to vault into the
points lead. He would never relinquish it again on the way to the sixth
of his seven Cup titles.

Perhaps the low point of the modern era. Fans need to read about this
race when they want to complain about the current state of the sport.

@8 Whatever caused the swap, it happened after qualifying. Only 19
drivers set a time, Champion was one of them (in 13th), Ballard was not.
Starting positions show the swap was tnen made.
