Pearson was easily the best car in this race and could pass cars at
will. Bobby Allison was down two laps in this race. Great three car
finish between Bobby Allison, his future rival Darrell Waltrip, and his
brother Donnie.

This was the second Rebel 500 race that I attended as a Boy Scout. It
would be the only time that I would witness a win by Bobby Allison. He
would also win the Southern 500 later that year. "The Lady in Black"
smiled on Bobby that year.

In a Tweet posted by @FOX: NASCAR, Darrell Waltrip in an interview with
Daryl Motte explains that he believes Bobby Allison was incorrectly
scored in this race. Much like North Wilkesboro in 1990, where DW was
also the victim of a now all but certain scoring error, he states that
the pace car incorrectly picked up Allison as the leader, when he was
actually on the tail end of the longest line.

That would be a major impact on the all-time wins list if that was the
case. Not only would it have broken a 84 win tie between DW and Allison,
instead being 85-83 in favor of Waltrip, it would also tie both Allison
and Jimmie Johnson at 83 wins as of this post.
You could unofficially tally up DW's win total to 86, if you were to
include the North Wilkes error.

That's interesting. I wonder how many errors like that occurred before
electronic timing and scoring was introduced. To be fair to Bobby, he
really should have 85 wins, so even if he didn't have this one, that
would be 84. Behind Darrell, but ahead of Jimmie & Cale.
