Don't feel too bad for young DW though, Waltrip broke through at Nashville to score his first career Cup win just two races later. This was Petty's penultimate Martinsville win and his 169th win overall. The closing stages of this race saw Cale Yarborough leading with Petty and Waltrip in pursuit. Yarborough's team had some issues on the last pit stop and he lost a lap as a result, never making it up, so while his car was still fast he'd have to settle for third. Petty pitted from the lead for fresh rubber with 29 laps to go while Waltrip stayed out, gambling the time saved would balance out his worn tires and get them the win. It didn't work as Petty put the spurs to the STP #43 Dodge and ran him down before passing him on the track for the win with 21 laps to go. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
