Either way, this was Burbank, California's Chuck Wahl's best Winston Cup
finish.

John Kieper, a former winner on the cup tour returns to the Cup series
in this event. His most recent previous start had been in 1957, 18 years
earilier

Two questions... why did Ray Elder and Richard Childress BOTH drive the
#96 in this race?... and was this the race where scenes of the "movie"
Riding With Death were filmed?

Jonny Lytnin'- Ray Elder competed on the Winston West circuit(I think he
won the title several times) hence the "W" after the "96". He was not a
Winston Cup regular as was Childress. Ray Elder has a Winston Cup
victory to his credit. Where did he win? Riverside, of course.

Chevrolet home ninth, picking up the first of his seven career top-10s
at Riverside.

No, the 1981 'film' "Riding with Death" did not use footage from this
race. The film made by editing together a pair of episodes from the
failed 1976 sci-fi TV series "Gemini Man," the second half of the movie
centered on a car race at Riverside but the vast majority of the racing
it featured was stock footage from a variety of late 1960s-early 1970s
Cup races as opposed to shooting during one race. Weirdly Richard
Petty's famous #43 shows up as both a plain blue 1969 Ford and a
blue-and-red 1970s STP Dodge in different scenes because of this.

Bobby Allison finishes runner-up in his return to NASCAR action. He and
the Penske AMC squad weren't running full-time and missed the prior
three races while he was off taking a shot at the Indianapolis 500.
Allison and Penske ran both NASCAR Winston Cup and USAC Champ Car races
throughout this season.

The two alternates for this race were Ron Gautsche ('75 Chevrolet) and
Ron Stagler ('73 Ford) so they should be added to the non-qualifiers.
