Darrell Waltrip blew two engines and was left without a qualifying time,
so he negotiated with Jabe Thomas and a host of alternates to gain the
35th starting spot and drove his way to 5th.

How rare is someone being a lap down with a DNF? It happened to Dave
Marcis in this race.

jp, I think he means finishing exactly one lap down. JeffGordonFan24,
Marcis probably blew his engine either with two laps to go or on the
white flag lap.

What is rare is a DNF and still finishing 3rd. Never see that again.

I can think of two third place finishers that were DNF's off the top of
my head. Darel Dieringer at Darlington in 1965 and Bobby Allison at
Darlington in 1973.

Richard Petty had a 3rd place finish at Hillsboro in 1959 that was a DNF
