He fell out on lap 19. 4. mkl62 posted: 12.26.2014 - 8:34 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Two things that I noticed: Cale wins with a new sponsor (Holly Farms) and Bobby Allison has Neil Bonnett driving for him. 5. Polesitter Benny Parsons needed a relief driver and the former Nashville track champion Marlin got the call to jump in the #72 Chevy as a result; helping bring his borrowed ride home with a top-5 finish for BP. Coo Coo's son Sterling Marlin was in attendance for this one and the future Cup star had a little fun after the race as he climbed a fence post just outside victory lane to pull the 1970s version of photobombing to sneak his way into Cale's victory pictures. NASCAR had lots of small fields in 1975 due to low purses but declined an offer from STP to add a bonus prize to this race. The company wanted to add an extra prize for the best finishing Dodge but as that was all but certainly going to be Richard Petty, who they sponsored, NASCAR prohibited it. The goal was to bump up the King's winnings at this race so he could pass the $2 million in career prize money figure at this event if he won it but with a second-place finish it wouldn't have been enough even if the bonus was allowed. Bobby Allison's part-time campaign saw him skip this event. He ran both halves of a USAC Stock Car/USAC Champ Car doubleheader at M.I.S. instead this weekend; finishing second to Terry Ryan in the stock car race but his last-ever IndyCar outing resulted in a blown engine. I don't think this race was televised but a spectator named Ricky Haynes shot a Super 8 home movie of parts of this race. That silent film is now available on YouTube and the footage is pretty good quality. 6. After local hero Darrell Waltrip retired in the opening laps Cale Yarborough dominated the event en route to his second-straight Nashville 420 victory. It was a "spin and win" day for Cale as he looped it on the front stretch just passed lap 300 to avoid crashing into the spinning car of David Sisco, but didn't hit anything and held on to the lead since he had lapped the field by that point. Teams had to beat the heat as this one was run a muggy summer day with temperatures reaching up into the mid-80s. This was the first of 20 victories for the potent partnership of Yarborough, Junior Johnson's #11 team, and sponsor Holly Farms poultry; the chicken company backing its efforts from mid-1975 through the end of the 1977 season. The team had a slightly new livery for this race as after running an all-white Holly Farms scheme earlier in the year the team switched running an orange hood and trunk starting off here. There was some controversy after the race when a dispute with track management led Yarborough to skip the traditional post-race interview in the press box after the track refused to grant passes to some Holly Farms guests the team brought to the track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
