The black flag waved with two laps remaining so Pearson was within the rules. As for pandering, Purolator actually helped raise money for the late Randy Owens' family. Prior to this race, Purolator allowed the Richard Petty Fan Club to meet under their hospitality tent. Purolator's stipulation was that Petty would charge his fans admission and then donate the proceeds to Randy Owens' survivors. Grateful for Purolator's charity, Richard Petty said after the race that he was glad the Purolator team won, if the STP team couldn't. Randy Owens was Lynda Petty's brother who was killed in a freak air tank explosion at Talladegea three months earlier. 4.
