I remember this race- well actually only the last half of the last lap.
David Pearson was a thorn in Petty's
side, plain and simple. It looked like he would beat Petty again but I
knew different. Of course with ABC's
delayed coverage (1 week) who didn't?
But it was how! This time it was Petty with the last lap move in turn
four. A fake high then a dive to the low side to outfox the "Silverfox"
for the win!

Modern Era, for the last nine years you have been unchallenged on your
post about this race. However, after listening to the Throwback Thursday
coverage of this race, I wonder what race you are talking about. There
was no last lao, last turn pass for the win in this one.

I may be wrong, but at 878 points I believe this is the largest points
lead that anyone has ever accumulated in the Latford system.

Charlie Glotzbach led one lap early in this race before a transmission
failure sidelined his one-off entry in the #3 Kmart Chevrolet. It was
the last lap he ever led in Cup competition.

I mixed this race up with the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan a few
months earlier. By the time ABC got around to showing that one it
probably was October.

Ferrel Harris qualified for Hershel McGriff, Harry Gant qualified for
Neil Castles and Earl Brooks qualified for Jabe Thomas.

Dick Skillen qualified 40th in a Chevrolet but withdrew, allowing Joe
Frasson to start at the back.
