This was the only time the Bristol event was run in Novemeber. Track
President Larry Carrier switched the event due to overwhelming heat
conditions during the summer months. The event was shortened to 400
miles and run in late August the following two seasons. However in 1978
the race once again became a 500-mile event.

That is a 500 LAP event. 500 miles would be 938 laps.

I think 938 laps at Bristol is a little bit long...even with the
14-second laps. It would take about twice the time of a regular 500-lap
races (5 hours, 23 minutes, 38 seconds for this race).

John Utsman qualified for Elmo Langley.

Henley Gray qualified 30th in a '75 Chevrolet but withdrew, allowing
Jabe Thomas to take the start in the car which Earl Brooks failed to
qualify (Brooks was 2nd alternate, 1st alternate Dean Dalton moved ahead
of Dick May in the line-up for reasons unknown).
