Of all the drivers in this race, Dave Marcis is the one who has competed most recently (2002 Daytona 500), followed by Darrell Waltrip (2000 NAPA 500). 2. How long was this race? Bobby Allison blew his engine and in 63 minutes had a new one installed. He took 15th. He blew his second engine with two laps remaining. 4. I remember Petty getting by him in turn 6. Unfotunately that was his high point for the day and mine. Nobody could run with #21 the rest of the day. 5. Ironic all the Fords did so badly here >_> 6. It would happen with Darrell Waltrip in 1979 at Richmond. However, since 1980, NASCAR has banned that during races. 11. Ottinger was 2nd, followed by Gary Crossland, Joe Chamberlain and Bill Osborne. Bobby Allison, Neil Bonnett and Hershel McGriff were all in the race as well. 12. The sports drink sponsored Johnny Rutherford's USAC Champ Car entry the year before but despite a second-place finish in the Indy 500 it shifted its sponsorship from Lone Star JR to DW and NASCAR for 1976. Gatorade was a Stokely-Van Camp product at the time and part of the reason the company switched to NASCAR dealt with the 1975 Indy 500. Company head Bill Stokely tried to attend the race to see Rutherford compete but got hassled heavily by people working at the track about credentials and it soured him on Indy Car racing and opened the door for the switch to stock cars. The new partnership with DiGard and DW would soon prove fruitful... 13. The victory was the start of a string of successes for Pearson, the Woods, and the #21 Mercury out in Southern California. 14. And they were good. Transmission maybe 20 minutes. They were doing engines in just a little more time than that. This race started at 11AM PST had an hour of daylight to spare at the end. 15.
