Allison hit fenders with Yarborough on the bacstretch. His Mercury hit the outside wall and went about 20 feet into the air. Allison's car tumbled nearly the entire backstretch. "The car wasn't handling worth a darn - while it was upside down," Allison later said. Allison spent three days in the hospital but suffered no serious injuries. He did suffer discomfort when his eye popped out of its socket. The crash took out Richard Childress and Bruce Hill as well. Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker and Yarborough fell off the lead lap because of damage they had because of the crash. 9. This was the first of three straight wins for Petty at Rockingham. Pearson won the first two races of the year and came into this one leading the points, not that it mattered once since the Wood Brothers didn't run full time. He was again fast here, leading in the opening laps, but fell out before halfway with an oil pump issue. Benny Parsons' top-5 run allowed him to move into the points lead afterward. This race had to be a relief for Darrell Waltrip. DW's first full-season with DiGard started out with his now Gatorade-sponsored entry failing to finish the first two races before he rebounded to finish second here to Petty. This first great run was a sign of things to come as the green-and-white Gatorade #88 would become one of the sport's iconic cars in the years to come. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
