Also, he gives the attendance as 20,000, and the margin of victory was 3 car lengths. 2. That's a good best finish for him. 3. dtroppens posted: 07.13.2008 - 5:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A late caution made it a one-lap race. Marcis took the low groove and beat out Petty by about three lengths. Lennie Pond looked to have a chance to get his first win until hooking fenders with Ed Negre. Apparently Negre was able to continue but Pond wasn't. 4. the Great Dave posted: 09.03.2012 - 10:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the Race Cale Yarborough crashed into a fire truck. 5. b4il3y posted: 07.11.2013 - 3:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) thank ed... 6. mkl62 posted: 01.13.2015 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A lot of entries without sponsors in this race. 7. In Reading the decision was made to strip the remaining AMC Matador chassis off its bodywork and 'convert' it into the Mercury. To make things even worse, on the way to the track the hauler broke and Bobby Allison missed the practice session, so he started from the pole (which he won two weeks before) in a car he had no tested at all. It's a small miracle that Bobby managed to finish 3rd given the circumstances. Also, Richard Petty lost two cylinders during the race. How on earth he managed to compete for the win I don't know. 8. Cale Yarborough was racing hard with Dave Marcis and Richard Petty for the lead in the closing laps when lost it in Turn 4, hit the inside wall hard, ricocheted up to hit the outside wall, and then the damage to the #11 Holly Farms Chevrolet left him out of control as he slide down the track and went right through a gap in the guardrail into the infield where he hit the fire truck head on. The impact with the truck wasn't a big one, Cale's Chevy had lost a lot of speed but he still hit it hard enough to move the big red truck back a bit. The truck had only minor damage but the #11 was smashed up quite good. Yarborough noted that after the race the fire department actually sent him a bill for the damage to the truck although he didn't pay it (NASCAR wasn't exactly a big bucks sport back then). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
