Buck Baker's last top-10 finish, just one of a kajillion milestones
recorded in Junie Donlavey's equipment.

A pretty big practice crash for this race ended the career of long-time
independent Bill Champion. He was the guy who helped Million Dollar Bill
start his career.

Doing more research, I've found that Champion spun in practice and was
hit in the driver's door by Jackie Rogers. He suffered broken ribs as a
result, and called it quits from the hospital bed. Champion had been
competing since 1951.

This was the third Rebel 500 that I attended when I was in Boy Scouts.
David Pearson won this race, which was the second time that I witnessed
him doing so (1974). He would also win the Southern 500 on Labor Day. So
I guess that you could say that 1976 was his year at Darlington.

Driver Change - the link's actually in the comments for Talladega, 2
races ahead, but the staring line-up shows it was Walter Ballard who
gave up his seat to Bruce Hill after Bruce missed the field in his own
entry.
