More than two decades later in mid-1996 the White Knight would return to the team and become its full-time driver during its later years. 7. This was the fourth and final win for the Silver Fox at Charlotte. 9. May 1976 was a big month for Guthrie as she became the first woman to attempt to qualify for the Indy 500. When she missed the field at the Brickyard Humpy Wheeler pulled off one of his signature marketing coups by convincing her to come and race at the World 600 instead. With the eyes of America now on Charlotte Guthrie turned in a solid run to finish 15th and drive well over 500 miles in the process, silencing some of the era's critics who thought women wouldn't be able to go the distance in long oval races. Guthrie's #68 was a late entry with Wheeler convincing local bank executive Lynda Ferreri to field the car for her. Veteran mechanic Ralph Moody was brought in to tune the car up. The Junior Johnson team helped get Guthrie up to speed in practice with Cale Yarborough taking the #68 around the track for a few laps to shake out what needed to be done before Johnson and his crew provided a setup to help out Guthrie. Janet Guthrie's surprise move to NASCAR for this race was as you'd expect hugely publicized and the turnout at the track for this race was gigantic because of it. 10.
