Petty cut a tire with 23 to go, but Dave Marcis' blown engine brought out the yellow. Pearson put up a second lead on Petty, but slipped high in One with three to go, then skidded through the Tunnel Turn coming to the white flag, the result of a flat right rear tire. Petty raced to a popular win. 3. I realize there weren't 25 cars on the lead lap at the finish like today's races, but there's an intangible element you can't put a finger on. Something about these old races are much, much better than the vanilla races, drivers, and contrived finishes of races today. 6. Actually, other drivers had the sponsor before Johnson. I know for a fact Mike Skinner was sponsored by Lowe's, and I believe Brett Bodine may have been as well 8. His crew push the Chevrolet in the garage and put a new engine in an astounding 33 minutes ! 10. mkl62 posted: 01.27.2015 - 11:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cale lost an engine and the crew replaced it. That was common back then. However, starting in 1980, that was prohibited. If the engine blows today, the driver is done for the day. 11. bbigjohnson posted: 06.08.2015 - 11:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) mkl62 It was not common for crews to replace engines back then. From what I remember Junior Johnson's crew for Cale were the only ones doing it. They did it a few times from what I remember. They changed just about anything in 1977, where he was running at the finish in all 30 races. His average finish that year was an amazing 4.5 12. I can't get enough of the broadcasts anchored by Ken Squier and backed up by some of the best turn announcers ever. Squier brought something to the table that can never be duplicated. I announced our local races on the area radio station for a few years and Mr. Squier was my inspiration. 13. Petty won here in USAC action in 1973 then won a pair of Cup races here after the track joined the NASCAR tour. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
