The last of 33 times that David Pearson finished 1st and Richard Petty

Pearson finally claims his 1st Southern 500, the final jewel in his '76
triple crown, along with his Daytona 500 & World 600 victories that year
en route to 10 wins in 22 starts

Pearson went 11 out of 18 in 1973, and there was only one race at MIS
that year. 1973 was also the year before the first NASCAR Pocono race.
If Pearson would have entered 22 races in 1973 instead of only 18 he
might have won 13 or 14 races out of 22.

Pearson takes both races at Darlington in 1976. The Lady in Black was
smiling on him that year.

A scary accident took place around half way when Skip Manning spun.
While he innocently spun down the track, right in to the path of Frasson
who T-boned, aside from Manning having his foot trapped in the car till
rescuers could get him out, he was relatively ok, although he did miss
the next race.

Former Georgia Governor, and Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket taker, Jimmy
Carter visited this race as part of his ultimately successful
presidential campaign.
