Coming across the stripe at the white, Waltrip led with Allison in second, Yarborough third, Parsons fourth. In turn one, Waltrip broke the draft and drove to the bottom of the track, gaining a five or six carlength advantage. The advantage disintegrated on the backstretch, as Allison showed his hand first, trying vainly to get by Waltrip but was trained by Yarborough who drove up the center and Parsons who rocketed on the inside. Yarborough swept up Allison's draft high and banged into Waltrip as he tried to beat him out of four but nearly lost it as he kept his foot in the throttle of his ill-handling car. When Yarborough slipped, Parsons took it and as they came through the trioval, Waltrip drove away from the battle for second as Parsons and Yarborough slammed into each other for second and Allison tried to steal it up high. It was Yarborough beating out Parsons by inches with Allison fourth and Waltrip taking the victory. 2. The first day here was Wednesday and they took 14 positions. The motor that Cecil Gordon had in the car had run the two previous events, both short tracks, Bristol and Martinsville. It was the only motor we had. We made the show the first day in 14th position. I want to say with a speed around 185 mph.I guess now that would be" P14". We bumped the 15 car to second day qualifying and Buddy and Bud scratching their heads. They were not alone in that thinking. Cecil and I were both happily scratching our heads as how it we ran that fast. 8. bayley01 posted: 06.09.2016 - 8:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I want more Billy B. 9. The team had hired Darel Dieringer as team manager the week before Darlington and Ifft and Dieringer didn't work well together, so Ifft quit. Buddy Parrot would take of over the crew chief duties for the 88 and Ifft would move to the 27 with Sam Sommers starting at Nashville. (from Stock Car Magazine August 1977) 10. Michael Waltrip won four points-paying Cup races throughout his career so this win made DW the more victorious of the two siblings at NASCAR's top level. Young Michael Waltrip, still about eight years away from his Cup debut at this point, likely had a great weekend though here as he turned 14 on Saturday then had big brother win on Sunday. 14. But the NASCAR rookie committee voted not to award rookie points to Guthrie because of this and Ferreri threatened to withdraw the team. Don't know how much politics was involved in this matter, but eventually the rookie committee decided to allow Guthrie to receive rookie points for the race. 15. After that, LMS skipped a few years, then returned in 1977-1979. In 1980 the Grand American series ran there, and Rusty Wallace won. The track has hosted an odd assortment of other NASCAR feeder series races and events for other sanctioning bodies on and off over the years. 18.
