By this method, he busted Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Hoss Ellington, M.C. Anderson and DiGard. Benny Parsons and Donnie Allison battled for the lead early; it changed twenty times. David Sisco allowed Bruce Hill to take over his car when he learned that his mother had been struck by a camper in the infield. The race continued under mainly green flag conditions, with engine failures taking out most of the competition. When a final caution flag came out for Janet Guthrie's second engine failure of the day (she lost a hundred laps replacing her first one), Donnie Allison pitted. He swallowed down an entire bottle of cola in a gulp, and all but passed out when he drove back onto the track -- "For god's sake, Hoss, get me someone," he cried out on the radio. Darrell Waltrip arrived to relieve him; Dick May blew up, and the caution flew. Darrell got in for Donnie and ended up winning the race when Skip Manning broke an oil line while leading. Cale Yarborough finished second with only "high gear and the sorriest Chevrolet on the track.". 2. myself posted: 02.14.2007 - 3:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cale re-takes the points lead! 3. biffle16 posted: 02.26.2007 - 11:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) Who the hell is Steve Moore? 4. He made 18 starts in Winston Cup competition, so why the ask? 7. A bizarre tragedy, to be sure. 8. nascarman posted: 12.11.2008 - 7:16 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) Also this was the last race that Elvis was alive for. 9. Exactly 2. Why is that amazing? If you say 20% of his wins it is. Can you imagine Petty with 40 of his wins by relief driver? B. Allison, C.Yarborough or D. Waltrip with about 16 wins via relief driver. Well certainly not with Yarborough, he would never get out of a car until it was done or the race was. Probably not with Waltrip either. 13. zuel660 posted: 03.27.2015 - 10:20 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Hoss should've given Donnie Gatorade instead of cola! lol 14. When he won the race subbing for Donnie Allison and pulling into victory lane and the team was like in DW's words "thanks DW heres some gatorade", Donnie took home the trophy and prize money" 15. The winner was Ron Hutcherson in a Chevy, followed by Jim Sauter, Bruce Hill, Grand Adcox and Harold Fair. Sterling Marlin finished 14th. 16. DiGard gave their backup engine to Ricky Rudd after he lost his primary one during the Saturday practice. This resulted in the best career result for Ricky at the moment. Also I'd like to share with you comments made by Yarborough and Johnson after the race (via NASCAR 1977 Yearbook). The reactions are interesting in the light of the fact that Cale returned to the top of point standings and later won his second title. Yarborough: "I didn't have anything to beat them with, even if I could have caught up with the leaders. I had the weakest Chevrolet on the entire track excusing none. If I'd have lucked up and won this race, they would have had me in court next week for stealing. We ain't even in their ballgame. We're playing sandlot ball against major league teams." Johnson: "We're in the middle of some engine problems right now, and we're also trying to win the national point championship. If Cale starts running his mouth, he'll be looking for another car." 17. Hoss Ellington got it for him specifically because it was Waltrip's regular sponsor. 18. He DNQ'd for a few, but this was the only one where he wasn't entered. 19. However, he entered 65 Talladega races, with 4 DNQs. His lone Talladega win came in the 1976 Talladega 500, leading 35 laps from the pole driving Nord Krauskopf's #71 K & K Insurance Dodge. 20. It fits every template NASCAR's got, but Bill Gazaway [the inspector] says its illegal.? ?He says there's something wrong with the fenders on the car, but he can't tell us what. There's some reason [NASCAR] don't want us to run. I don't know why. There's nothing wrong with our car.? Ron won the ARCA race the day before. ?We could have run the ARCA car in the NASCAR race, but we didn't want to. That would be admitting we did something wrong and we aren't gonna do that? http://www.midwestracingarchives.com/2012/08/1977-ron-hutcherson-triumphs-in-arca.html 21.
