This race led to Darrell Waltrip getting the nickname Jaws. He and Cale
were racing for the lead when they came up to lap D.K. Ulrich. Darrell
didn't like the way Ulrich didn't get out of the way, so DW ran into the
back of him and ended up wrecking them both. Afterward Cale said that it
was Jaws that caused the wreck, and the nickname stuck.

Anyone know why Bill ran the #52 for this race? He ran the #9 every
other race he ran this year, and no other driver in the field was
running that number.

Maybe Jimmy Means whose # was 52 struck a deal with the Elliots to get
into the show. They must have had a problem because Elliot was great at
Darlington! (lots of other tracks also)

Bill Elliott was driving the 52 in this race because it was a favor for
Jimmy Means. Jimmy had gotten banged up (bum ankle if I remember right)
in a crash at Talladega and wasn't able to race. Since he ran all the
races, he was on the plan (guaranteed money for entering and starting a
race if you were high enough in points). Bill didn't run all the races
so he wasn't on the plan. By running the 52 and gaining owner points for
Means, it allowed him to stay on the plan until he could race again.

Dave Marcis drove much of the race in relief of Richard Petty.

Pearson was winless in his first 15 Southern 500s, but then takes 3 out
of 4 in '76, '77, & '79.
