Donnie was forced out of the groove and in the ensuing melee there was a huge crash on the front straight coming down to the checkers. 4. The race was rain-shortened, but even so, it seems odd that they would have wasted so many laps riding around under caution. Does anyone know more of the details behind this race? 8. David posted: 09.26.2020 - 3:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The official race report confirms 5 cautions and 99 laps, without a breakdown. It wasn't terribly uncommon to ride around in damp conditions in those days, so that's surely the reason for the unusually high number of laps. 9. Just out of curiosity, where do you find official race reports from that far back? 10. possum posted: 09.26.2020 - 7:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @7 - it appears that 3 of the 5 cautions were for rain, so David's suggestion that most of the 99 laps was trying to dry the track (remember, no jet driers in 1997) is probably correct. 11. rateus posted: 02.14.2021 - 2:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roland Wlodyka qualified for Dick May, Jim Hurtubise qualified for Harold Miller and Lennie Pond qualified for Tighe Scott. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
