It would prove to be a very good idea. Bill Elliott finishes sixth and claims the first of his 21 top-10 finishes at Talladega. Joe Millikan won in a Dodge, Donnie Allison was second followed by Ray Hendrick, Neil Bonnett and Randy Tissot. Sterling Marlin was 6th, Morgan Shepherd was 7th, Harry Gant 9th, Darrell Waltrip 21st, Bob Keselowski 22nd, Geoffrey Bodine 26th, Jack Ingram 27th, Bobby Allison 29th, Gene Glover was 33rd and Red Farmer was 35th. 12.
