Jocko Maggiacomo starts and finishes 37th in his blue-and-yellow #63 AMC Matador bringing the curtain down on the company's NASCAR involvement. Maggiacomo was a suprisingly fitting driver to be at wheel of the last NASCAR start for an American Motors Corporation product, he won a Trans-Am title at the wheel of an AMC Javelin in 1976. The street-going version of the Matador was in the process of being discontinued when this race was run. AMC was a company in trouble in the late 1970s, the earlier end of its factory NASCAR program with Roger Penske was nothing compared to its financial woes as sales of the new Pacer started to drop off just as everything else that they had that wasn't a Jeep wasn't selling well. In early 1978 the company had just teamed up with French automaker Renault in an effort to turn their fortunes around but despite developing some very innovative cars in the coming years, such as the all-wheel Eagle which in many ways was a crossover decades before they became popular, the company's fortunes never quite turned around. AMC sold out to Chrysler in 1987 with the Big 3 firm buying them out largely for the Jeep line. 7.
