I bought tickets the afternoon of the race. I dont think it was a sellout. 2. RaceFanX posted: 12.17.2009 - 10:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roger Hamby's best Cup finish in 10th 3. This was the race where Darrell Waltrip said he would replace Lennie Pond in Ranier's car; Darrell sideswiped Pond and Pond later crashed into Waltrip with a blown tire. One of the might-have-beens of the decade was that Richard Petty wanted Pond as a teammate out of the Petty Ent. shops, but sponsorship for a second Dodge never developed. 5. This was only 2 weeks after switching to GM from Chrysler, and the only race-ready Chevy Petty had in his fleet had been written off in a wreck the previous week at Michigan. 6. oldschoolracing519 posted: 11.05.2017 - 7:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) what #5 says is correct, so Henley Gray should be listed as the owner for this race 7. Started from pole, led until lap 31 then Darrell, while making a pass for the lead, apparently cut a tire on Lennie's car. At least that is how Lennie explained his spin afterwards. Soon after - another incident. Cecil Gordon shoved Lennie to the guardrail and made him almost leap the wall. And the final straw: on lap 107 Lennie spun Waltrip (Pond denied it was intentional, Darrell thought otherwise) and that was enough for Harry Ranier. He reportedly ordered Lennie to park the car, being furious that the race is turning into the shoving match between his current and future driver (before Bristol Ranier and Waltrip agreed to personal terms for 1979 and the only question was how to negotiate the buying off Darrell's contract with DiGard). The bad blood between Waltrip and Pond had its roots in 1973, when Lennie was named ROTY and Darrell was voicing his displeasure with this decision, claiming that he was a better choice for the award. 8.
