Not only was this Kyle Petty's first race, but also his first top 10.

It was also the first time a driver named Kyle has raced in any of
NASCAR's top series; the only others have been Kyle Busch and Kyle
Krisiloff.

David Pearson returns to the tour after a 12-race absence following his
departure from the Wood Brothers, driving Rod Osterlund's #2 Olds in
relief of injured rookie Dale Earnhardt. Pearson scored a strong second
in the first of four races in the blue and yellow duece, which climaxed
in a victory at Darlington.

Also, a strong third was a career-best to that point finish for Ricky Rudd.

The Talladega ARCA 200 was run the day before this race. The winner was
Sandy Satullo in a Buick, followed by Phil Finney, Marvin Smith, Al
Horton and Bill Green. Sterling Marlin was 16th, Billy Hagan was 20th.

County singer Marty Robbins had a new number for this race, having given
his signature #42 to Kyle Petty he choose to run this race with the #36
on his Dodge. This was his only race in the #36 before he switched again
to the #6. Supposedly he choose his new number by picking it from a hat
(Not sure if that was the #6 or #36).
