Is this the slimmest margin in the history of Nascar that a point leader
took into the final race?! Waltrip led Petty by 2 heading into the finale!

Bobby Allison towed Darrell Waltrip past Petty late in the race as Bobby
tried to get drafting help to catch the front three.

Lap 199-206 - Kyle Petty blows an engine and spins in Turn 1 while Benny
Parsons blows an engine leaving pit road.
Lap 208-210 - Tighe Scott hits the wall in Turns 3 & 4 and tags Richard
Petty
Lap 256-259 - John Anderson spins in Turn 3
Lap 269-273 - Anderson blows an engine

Did Not Qualify:
Lake Speed

No additional info on the car, but this was Lake's first attempt to
qualify for a Cup race. "Midway through the session, rookie driver Lake
Speed of Jackson, Miss, crashed on the homestretch, wiping out both his
car and the electronic starter lights. That resulted in a 30 minute
delay for repair of the lights. Speed, the 1978 world go-kart champion,
had spun in the second turn of his first lap, obviously putting bald
spots on his tires, and when he continued to run, he lost the car
completely coming out of turn four, smacked into the pit retaining wall
and then ricocheted across track straight into the outside wall."

Dick May.
