"Midway through the session, rookie driver Lake Speed of Jackson, Miss, crashed on the homestretch, wiping out both his car and the electronic starter lights. That resulted in a 30 minute delay for repair of the lights. Speed, the 1978 world go-kart champion, had spun in the second turn of his first lap, obviously putting bald spots on his tires, and when he continued to run, he lost the car completely coming out of turn four, smacked into the pit retaining wall and then ricocheted across track straight into the outside wall." 7.
