David Pearson wins 258.174 mile race at Darlington, gaining his 105th
and final win.

Harry Gant finishes in the Top 5 for the first time. He eventually
scored 123 Top 5s.

Very fitting for the Silver Fox's final win to come at Darlington....a
place where he was so dominant! Also it was in his home state of South
Carolina!

In addition to Pearson, this was also the last victory for Hoss
Ellington and the #1 Hawaiian Tropic team

The final race that I attended there. I will never forget the first lap
crash started between Terry Labonte and Richard Petty that took out Neil
Bonnett and crippled a lot of other race cars. David Pearson would win
his last race there. That September, Labonte would beat Pearson back to
the line on a caution and win his first ever race, the 1979 Southern 500.

The Sportsman Div ran the TranSouth 200 the day before and the winner
was David Pearson driving a J.W. Hunt sponsored Pontiac Ventura, he beat
Dave Marcis with a last lap pass, Neil Bonnett was 3rd, Jody Ridley 4th
and Jack Ingram 5th.

Bill Hollar qualified for Dick May and Ferrel Harris qualified for Cecil
Gordon.

The starting line-up also shows Travis Tiller in 37th with no time
recorded, presumably he was the provisional but ddin't start.
