The race started late because it rained pretty good that day, but in the end, BP barely edged DW for the victory. 3. Good that a class act like BP took the win, however. BP is my favorite driver of the 70's and 80's, because he's the one that discovered Greg Biffle. BP was an exceptional announcer while he was with Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett. This day was blacker than a pitch-black panther, covered in tar, eating black licorice, at the very bottom of the Black Sea. 5. David Pearson achieves a new one lap record with a speed of 165.477 mph during the qualifying session. Note: The race was red flagged twice for a total time of 1 hour, 36 minutes, 54 seconds due to rain. 12. It was in reality no less than 1.5 car length's. 14. Had 22 cautions. 15. Back when Petty first got the STP sponsorship, he and Andy Granatelli had a long arguement about the car color, with Petty insisting on Petty blue, and Granatelli adamant that it be STP red. They eventually settled on using both colors for Richard's car, but Granatelli required any other car the Petty's entered to be red. 17. Ryan posted: 09.30.2019 - 11:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 There's actually a 1980 custom 1/24 scale Kyle Petty red STP car on eBay right now for sale @16 I believe Grantelli actually put a clause in their initial contract in 1972 with Petty that they would give Richard an extra $50,000 to paint Petty's car all day-glow red and not to have any Petty blue in it. Richard scribbled it out. The actual sponsorship contract was $250,000, and that would have made it $300,000, but Richard, his brother Maurice and Dale Inman said no. Both parties compromised and the cars had both Petty blue and STP day-glow red. What's crazy is that after STP saw how good the colors looked together they started painting their INDY cars day-glow red and Petty blue. 18. possum posted: 10.01.2019 - 7:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @17 - Red was Granatelli's color. STP didn't start using the blue/red combination on other cars until after Granatelli had left STP. Granatelli's Indy cars were always all red. 19. David Pearson won driving a Pontiac Ventura, Bobby Allison was second, followed by Dave Marcis, Joe Ruttman and Richard Childress. The field was a mix of Sportsman Cars (Pontiac Ventura, Ford Fairmount, Nova) and Grand American cars (Camaro/Firebird) but it counted toward the Grand American championship. 22. As mechanical failures took out other contenders this one became a one-on-one pitting BP against DW in a thrilling finale with Parsons taking the win. The Pettys normally ran two-tone cars with reversed schemes; Richard had a blue car with red sides and stripes while Kyle had a red car with blue sides and stripes. The all-red #42 Kyle had here was a notable deviation from this trend. 24. rateus posted: 02.11.2021 - 5:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Buck Simmons qualified for Lennie Pond, DK Ulrich qualified for JD McDuffie and Ferrel Harris qualified for Baxter Price. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
