Wow, not often you see NASCAR name a race after themselves...

This was the first NASCAR race I attended. Only approx 100 fans were in
attendance for Winston Cup qualifying.
During the race, Cale Yarborough ran out of gas while leading, and
coasted from turn #3 to the pits. Note that were NO Cautions during this
race. I believe that this has happened only one time since.

Ronnie Thomas ran in the top 10 most of the day and appeared ready to
post a top 10 finish until the bottom of the left front fender - behind
the wheel - came loose and flapped wildly, earning him a black flag
twice. Finally cured with a long bungee cord, after several lost laps in
the pits, finishing 11th.

Interesting to note: Cale took the pole for the race even after hitting
a jackrabbit during his qualifying run.

That article seems to indicate he hit the jackrabbit during practice.

Apparently there was no radio nor television broadcast of any kind for
this race.

I was at this race and there were not many fans. I've read somewhere
around 14k but that sounds high. Only a few people in front of us on the
start finish line. Bobby Allison's Ford was popping and spitting back
like it had a burnt valve but after pitting it ran ok again. We sat and
talked to him at a seafood restaurant after the race and he told us a
plug wire was off. He had his wife Judy and son Clifford with him. He
was nice and very easy to talk too. He picked up on our Southern accent
and asked what we were doing in Texas. I am from NC but was working in
Glen Rose Texas building a Nuclear Power Plant at the time.
