Richard Petty broke his neck in a violent crash on lap 57.

This race was also Janet Guthrie's final Cup start.

This was the best career finish for Billie Harvey (11th). Tim Richmond
made his debut (12th). Nelson Oswald made his final start, which turned
out to be his worst finish (38th).

True Matt. He also hid the injury from NASCAR because they woulda made
him sit out several races, knowing full well another violent accident
coulda...well, we won't say.

This was the first instance in which a driver weaved across the race
track like a snake to "break the draft." Neil Bonnett weaved across the
track the last 10 laps to keep Baker and Yarborough behind him. This
drew criticism from Jackie Stewart saying it was dangerous and it was
bad manners. Also on the last lap a man walked out into the grass 10
feet from the track on the Long Pond Straight. After the finish he
walked onto the apron to applaude the top finishers, with a police
office not far behind.

Ryan Blaney won.

Bonnett's victory was both his first of 1980 and the penultimate one for
Mercury as a brand in NASCAR Cup competition. They wouldn't be waiting
long for the next one...

Some drunken shirtless fan ran onto the track on the last lap of this
race and was captured on TV footage in the infield grass running back as
the leaders passed by.
