Last race for the #16 team of owner Joel Hapern, with David Pearson
scoring a top ten with it in this race. Hapern was fetally injured in a
boating accident in Louisana in March.

Fitting in Gant's first race in the Skoal Bandit 33, he finishes second,
just like he did for many years to come, finishing second, IIRC, 35 times.

On the way to the track I remember asking my dad 3 or 4 times who he
said had the pole. Couldn't remember the name Bill Elliot. 4 years later
we were there and watched him win a million dollars. I was a kid and
that was a BIG deal to me.

The NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Div ran the TranSouth 200 the day before
this race, the winner was Dave Marcis followed by David Pearson, Darrell
Waltrip, Mark Martin and Glenn Jarrett. Tim Richmond was 7th, Geoff
Bodine 12th, and Tommy Ellis 14th.

What a season for Harry Gant so far, racing for five different teams in
the first eight races of 1981 and still being third in points after all
that.

According to the 1981 Winston Cup Yearbook, Jake Elder was Bill
Elliott's crew chief for this race

Lake Speed qualified an Oldsmobile P24 but failed to take the start for
some reason, everyone behind moved up one position.
