Anthony posted: 06.02.2018 - 7:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It's crazy to realize that even though Darrell Waltrip won five of the first 10 races of the season, he was 60 points behind Terry Labonte. Labonte's 1982 was unbelievably consistency that year. Wins & bonus points did hindered his effort in winning the championship thus finishing 3rd in points that year. 10. There is a ton of races at Nashville where a driver led 400+ laps (out of 420), while finding a race at Bristol or Martinsville where someone cracked 450 is extremely rare. 11. RaceFanX posted: 03.28.2019 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Whenever you see Darrell Waltrip doing it as he did here I would chalk it up to home field advantage. Waltrip cut his teeth at Nashville on his way up the ladder and knew this track like the back of his hand, thus 19 top-5s in 25 starts here. 12. Was he entered and withdrew? 16. MSportRev posted: 04.23.2020 - 9:26 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) @15, the article that Scene Vault's Tweet Tweet includes says that L.W. Wright attempted to qualify and was not fast enough. Maybe he vanished after failing to qualify at Nashville? 17. ShinyMew151 posted: 04.23.2020 - 9:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm pretty sure the entries are sent in more than a week in advance, so he probably sent it in before Talladega 18. Yeet posted: 04.23.2020 - 12:24 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) To quote that newspaper article "Two drivers, Bob Schact and L.W. Wright were not fast enough and failed to make the field" That would imply L.W. made a lap, but wasn't one to qualify in, but as mentioned above he left his #34 car at Talladega. Also, I'd imagine Sterling told a lot of his racing friends about Wright's shenanigans, how did they not beat him to a pulp here when they probably saw him this weekend? This story sure took a big twist now with more to be hopefully revealed. 19. rm posted: 04.23.2020 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Interesting. Never knew there a part 2 to the LW Wright saga. The cash and equipment he made off with, as listed in the article, would be worth over $117k today. Far from a small-time con job! 20. Joshua posted: 04.23.2020 - 1:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Perhaps, for some reason, qualifying was held more than a week ahead of the race? 21. Yeet posted: 04.23.2020 - 1:58 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) Well, while looking for more answers to the details of this race trying to find out about Wright, found something interesting that I though I should share. James Hylton was sponsored by both Kawasaki and Suzuki dealerships from NC. To give both of the sponsors spotlight, the left side of the car was painted yellow with the Suzuki sponsorship, and the right side was painted green with the Kawasaki sponsorship. This however, confused NASCAR's scoring officials as it looked like two completely different cars. Following the race, NASCAR asked Hylton to not run this scheme again, and this was the only time Hylton ran this scheme. 22. RaceFanX posted: 04.23.2020 - 2:31 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) @21 That indeed was the case. The car wasn't even a half-and-half split as the top and the hood were red. Supposedly NASCAR also called the car "ugly" given its odd three-color look when they told him not to run his Dal Kawa Cycle livery set up like that again. NASCAR has never been big on half-and-half schemes and eventually they were banned all together. 23. rm posted: 04.23.2020 - 2:41 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) See the scheme here: http://nashville420.com/Races/1982-1.htm It sure is, uh, interesting - let's go with that. 24. Yeet posted: 04.23.2020 - 4:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 Yeah, half and half schemes are a creative way to give sponsors the satisfaction of sharing the spotlight, but let's just say it always looks better in someone's head than it actually does on a car. Another team I can think of that went half and half was Tommy Baldwin Racing in the 2016 Daytona 500, where the front half of Regan's car was sponsored by Golden Corral, and the back half sponsored by NIKKO. Not only the car look neater with the horizontal split than the vertical, they both got exposure at the biggest race in NASCAR. 25. PucciMan posted: 04.23.2020 - 7:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @24 They also did that to Terry Labonte at his last race as well. 26. TTaylor944 posted: 04.23.2020 - 10:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Terry's was actually a three-way paint scheme. One side celebrated his Piedmont era, one celebrated the Corn Flakes era, and I forget what the middle was supposed to be. It was one of the coolest looking cars that I've seen in many years, but NASCAR made them change it so that both sides matched. 27. Corey posted: 04.23.2020 - 11:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 I don't think the middle was supposed to be anything. The closest it looks like was during his Junior Johnson Bud days, but that was full on red on top with white only on the sides. 28. TTaylor944 posted: 04.23.2020 - 11:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I went back to search the Jayski archives to see what it was. C&J Energy was their sponsor for this race. The entire middle portion was their scheme, including the entirety of the hood. It wasn't honoring anything, just giving them maximum attention while honoring Terry. 29. JayJ posted: 04.24.2020 - 7:14 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Actually the center part was the original car he drove for Hagan in ?78. He said it in an interview. Pretty cool 30. MarkMartinFan posted: 04.24.2020 - 7:14 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The middle portion of his paint scheme was meant to be a tribute to his first start. 31. Rob posted: 04.24.2020 - 7:15 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Actually I believe the middle portion of the scheme was based on the car was based on the Stratagraph scheme Terry ran during his rookie year with Billy Hagan in 1979. Piedmont didn't come aboard until the 1984 season. I definitely don't think it was the C&J Energy scheme as their schemes were always silver and black. 32.
