He was hobbling around on crutches for several months and had to undergo some facial surgery. Luckily, it was the last race of the season anyway. 2. Pretty cool, huh? 7. most posted: 03.24.2008 - 8:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 2 stumpers: Jimmy Means has alot of goose eggs to show for his career but not many people can say they finished ahead of Dale Earnhardt when they ran toe to toe with him (meaning both started all races)!!! No lies, Means finished 11th to Dale's 12th in 1982. Dale had a terrible year in 82 but I would honestly think that was the biggest accomplishment statistically speaking for Jimmy, too bad he wasn't in the top 10 though :( (also to note: Dale came into the final race 10th and finished last moving him down 2 spots) Another strange twist in a strange season, Buddy Arrington finished 7th in points, leading 6 laps (of the 14 he ever led) and was 2nd in miles and laps completed. You wouldn't see something like that these days! 8. As a big fan of Mountain Dew, Junior Johnson and JD McDuffie, I'd really like to see that car, and perhaps even build a model of it! 9. And define "Of all people". 12. RaceFanX posted: 10.28.2009 - 11:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tim Richmond's second win comes in his last race for the #2 J.D. Stacy team. This was also the last race for which J.D. really pumped money into NASCAR. The blue and yellow #2 was still on the track in 1983, first with Mark Martin and later Morgan Shepherd driving it, but it was underfunded and never won again. 13. The Great Dave posted: 01.05.2017 - 12:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't think Schmitt was a Junior Johnson entry, Schmitt had Mountain Dew as a sponsor most of the year (though I suspect it was a distributor sponsoring him and just using the Mountain Dew Name, So I doubt it was Junior Johnson entry. McDuffie IIRC wrecked in practice or ran out of cars at the time and rented a Junior Johnson Back up. 25. The Great Dave posted: 01.05.2017 - 12:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "with only one DNQ? " To be fair there may have been more than 1 DNQ. The reason we know the #61 DNQed is because there are photos of this car. http://bakerracingpix.com/data/images/1982ww048.jpg Its possible there were others, but this is the only confirmed one. 26. Greg posted: 04.06.2017 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Clive Skilton's DNQ #61 must have been a Buick. He drove nothing but Buicks in the Winston West series. He used to work for Jaguar dealership once his drag racing career flamed out and said in an interview for eurodragster.com that he was once doing 168 mph on the Riverside backstretch in his Buick Regal when Richard Petty blew past him and the stream almost ripped the door off his car. He also said he "raced" the Pettys and Allisons for three years when the series visited West Coast and has entered Sonoma and Phoenix races. I guess that means practice since he never made an official Winston Cup start. However he probably DNQ'd more times than just here in 1982. 29. Scott B posted: 12.12.2017 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I haven't been able to locate good video or photos of the race to positively ID Bobby Allison's car, though he was a contender till he dropped out. I've found still pics of #75 Jimmy Insolo's Pontiac at this race being a LeMans, and also #71 Dave Marcis in a LeMans (with ironic sponsorship from Miller Brothers Chevy). The majority of the Pontiac entries were in Grand Prix sheet metal, but it's very possible Allison was among the exceptions. They popped up a few times after NASCAR took away their initial aero advantages, and a road race would be a logical place for teams to pull out something that hadn't been used much. 33. nascarman posted: 12.12.2017 - 7:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Allison's car was a LeMans http://www.bakerracingpix.com/data/images/1982ww004.jpg 34. From that batch of photos, these entries were also LeMans bodied: #91 John Krebs #28 Joe Ruttman #08 Rick McCray That's more than I would have expected, with a few still unaccounted for. It was during a montage of his consecutive starts, and how him getting to that number wasn't easy (whether it was 513, 600, or whenever they were up to). I'm not sure if it was on Inside NASCAR, rpm2day, or during an actual race broadcast, but I'm going to try to find it and post it here - in my mind's eye, I remember it was one of those wrecks that hurt to watch. Not sure if you know what I mean by that, but... yeah. Fingers crossed that I can find that clip. 40. I remember this rare footage too.. you are prolly recalling the open telecast of the race where 'Texas' Terry Labonte became the Iron Man by breaking 'King' Richard Petty's record of consecutive starts. That would either be the '96 spring North Wilksboro race or the next race at Martinsville. Check out on YouTube, I'm sure the entire telecasts have been uploaded from those races. If that fails, try the 1996 season finale Napa 500 where he clinched the championship.
