Anonymous posted: 09.21.2010 - 2:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) A bit more to the story: DiGard were originally going to run #88 Gatorade Monte Carlos in 1983. Bobby Allison had basically designed the nose of the 1983 Monte Carlo by himself. He sent the design to Chevrolet, who made the noses, but then DiGard didn't get any of them. When Bobby asked Chevy what was going on, they told him to talk to Junior Johnson (who happened to be one of Bobby's fiercest rivals at the time, along with Johnson's driver Darrell Waltrip), and that he was in charge of distributing the new noses. Bobby absolutely refused, and DiGard remained with Buick. The reason Gatorade left is because at the last minute (the cars were already at Daytona for practice, and pictures exist of Allison's #88 Gatorade car at Daytona in 1983, along with Cliff Stewart's white unsponsored #50.) Miller came to DiGard and offered a lot more money than Gatorade was paying. Gatorade agreed to leave, but only if they could take the #88 with them. DiGard allowed them to do that, and so Gatorade moved to the Cliff Stewart team, who quickly changed the decals and paint scheme before the Busch Clash that was to be run the very next day. The reason Allison and DiGard picked #22 is because they said it was "twice as good as #11." Told you they were rivals... 14. myself posted: 05.24.2013 - 10:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks. 15. jimi d posted: 03.09.2017 - 7:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dave Dion Got stuffed in the fence that day :( 16. Ironically given Allison's help developing the new Chevrolet Monte Carlo this would be his only win driving the new car, DiGard switched to Buicks early in the year. All of Allison's remaining Cup victories came at the wheel of a Buick. 17. Yes there are pictures of a 1983 SS taken with Gatorade, but that was before the Miller deal was finalized. Bobby and DiGard showed up at Daytona with the #22 Miller High Life Chevrolet. Gatorade signed on with Stewart Racing the Monday after pole qualifying and Geff Bodine's Pontiac went from #50 to #88. Bobby and DiGard actually ran the SS for the first 3 races of the 1983 season. Shortly before Atlanta DiGard employee Elvin Rector went to the Chevrolet warehouse in Charlotte to retrieve body parts only to find out the DiGard key no longer worked. DiGard switched back to Buick and the rest is history. 20. joebev910 posted: 08.04.2018 - 7:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) wtbs broadcast that race 21. The Petty Enterprises team didn't have a spare so they called up a local Pontiac dealer to inquire about a replacement only to find out it didn't have any either. Desperate, at that point the team took note that they had a Pontiac Grand Prix as a rental car that week and actually cut the nose off it, welded that on the race car, and Petty raced with it. Petty brought the #7 home with a top-15 and the team rigged up the noseless rental so the headlights would still be straight and continued driving it throughout the weekend. They must have had a fun time returning that Pontiac to the rental company. 22.
