Bill Elliott almost wins his first Cup race, but loses a close battle to Richard Petty. Apparently this was the only race on ESPN that Petty won. 4. P. Lake Speed drove Hoss Ellington's car to his first career Top 5. Rookie Ronnie Hopkins made his debut with a career best 17th. He tied this at Bristol in May (that's right, May) and at Michigan in June. 6. Bill really wanted that first win, and Petty wanted off the 43 race winless streak. Elliott stalked and stalked and would have gotten by him if the race went one more lap I believe. 8. 18fan posted: 05.08.2009 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bob Jenkins made a big deal about Petty's win as it was the first and only race Petty won on ESPN. 9. He spun backwards and his left rear slammed the wall and Ruttman bounced off nearly getting airborne, almost flipping. A hard hard accident, luckily Ruttman was okay. 10. He won a few televised races, but nearly all of them were the highlighted, tape-delayed stuff (like Wide World of Sports or NBC SportsWorld). This and the '79 Daytona 500 were the only ones he won with flag-to-flag TV coverage (if you could even count this one, since there was no coverage of the first day). 15. myself posted: 01.24.2012 - 2:13 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Probably for the best. Petty usually won snoozers. 16. Evan posted: 09.04.2013 - 12:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks man, you been around longer than I have! I was born in 1987 and got into NASCAR around 1993 so I have no idea who showed what. 17. 83andJoe posted: 09.16.2013 - 11:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #8 crew chief: Harry Hyde (same for all races this year) 18. With the exception of his final two Daytona 500s and Wild World of Sports highlight reels, this was Petty's only televised win not at Daytona. 19. He started bailing out before the car came to a stop and aimed for a large puddle which helped put out the fire somewhat. Ernie Cline, in his final NASCAR start, crashed out during the caution for Marcis' engine failure. Cline pitted and on his way out of the backstretch pits he drove through another of the puddles on the inside of the track. That wet his slick tires, they lost traction, and he ended up hitting the wall in Turn 3/4. The impact knocked the local racer's Pontiac out of the race. 20. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 12.31.2016 - 12:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: green/yellow start Caution 2: #71 engine Caution 3: #15 accident turn 2 Caution 4: #21 spun turn 4 Caution 5: rain Caution 6: #33,47,98 accident turns 3/4 Caution 7: Caution 8: #88 accident turn 2 Caution 9: #28,75 accident turn 2 Caution 10: #64 accident 21. He led more laps in this race than the other two put together too. 24. Was it even legal for one driver to qualify 2 different entries back then? James Hylton also appears to have handled qualifying for Lennie Pond. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
