Allison and Waltrip were in a tight battle for the lead at the time and Allison beat Waltrip to the caution. By the time they crossed under the checkers it was a full fledged thunderstorm. 3. most posted: 03.24.2008 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I seem to remember seeing parts of this race, tornado warnings and whatnot were out for the area. 4. The same was true in 1986 regarding Kevin Cogan at Patrick Racing in the IndyCar series, when he came within a late caution of winning the Indianapolis 500. And that incident with several people being seriously injured, with two or three people being killed makes you wonder why any outdoor sporting event would takes place during a thunderstorm. Eight years later, after four people were killed in a lightning storm at the U.S. Open at Hazeltine in Chaska, MN in 1991, the PGA became one of the first major sporting organizations to stop the contest when there was a thunderstorm in the area, for the safety of not only the competitors and officials, but most importantly, the spectators. But still, you see auto races and outdoor baseball games continue when a thunderstorm is approaching, with the officials not stopping the contest until the storm has arrived, by which time, it might be too late one of these days. Major auto racing sanctioning bodies need to take their cue from the NFL and the major golf associations by instuting a rule that when a thunderstorm is nearby, that the contest be stopped ASAP, for the protection of the particpants, officials, and spectators. 10. He would not relinquish the top spot again all season on the way to his lone Cup championship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
