This was my first Cup race....I came from North Pole, Alaska to see
it.... I won the family "pool" as I drew Cale before the
race....Earnhardt driving the #15(and a Ford, no less!)

First time ever that the reigning Daytona 500 champ (Cale) and the
reigning Indy 500 champ (Tom Sneva) were in the same race.

Actually just the first time to having Sneva running against Cale as the
reigning 500 champion, several times before the reigning Indy and
Daytona 500 winners ran against each other (Both in NASCAR and even in
IndyCars)

I bought a Melling hat at the race (which I still have) and became a
dieheart Bill Elliott fan. I went to all the June races at MIS (but none
of the August events) from 1983-89 and saw Bill win four times.

Cale was a nonfactor for most of this race, struggling with his car's
handling. He restarted 10th with 50 to go and charged to the lead

Tom Sneva had the weekend off from CART and decided to give it a go here
just for some fun. The Gas Man wore a weird helmet in this race, in CART
everyone in this era wore full-face helmets but in NASCAR the open-face
one was still par for the course so Sneva wore one in this race but put
a small football helmet-like facemark on it to give his face added
protection, noting he wanted the better air circulation in a hot stock
car of an open helmet with more protection like a closed one.

Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett were the commentators. Mike Joy and Larry
Nuber were the pit road reporters.
