DW led on the final lap until Earnhardt slingshot past him on the backstretch. DW tried to slingshot Earnhardt back with the help of lapped traffic in the tri-oval but wasn't strong enough to get by the Intimidator. 2. chris posted: 07.17.2006 - 4:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Was it hot during the 1983 Talladega 500? 3. The air got blood red because of all the dirt being blown around. Earnhardt crossed the finish line to take the win and he no sooner got to turn one and the skys opened up and it poured. It was a great race though. 5. Steve posted: 12.05.2006 - 2:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) What caused the big crash on the second lap? Possibly oil from Neil Bonnett's blown engine? 6. Richmond was being interviewed in the pits about possibly getting back into the car. He said Bonnett was doing to good of a job to pull him out, and looked over his shoulder and asked for another beer. 10. rip posted: 10.31.2007 - 3:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Last start for Billie Harvey who passed away in 2007. 11. stricklinfan82 posted: 05.27.2008 - 2:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The finish was very controversial because it was the lapped car of Bobby Allison (DW's main rival for the championship) that helped push Earnhardt by Waltrip on the backstretch on the last lap. Allison finally backed off and let Darrell pass him back in turn 4 but by then it was too late for Waltrip to get back by Earnhardt. DW and his team were very upset at Allison as a result. 12. Some of my posts aren't nearly as offensive as these and they rarely get approved. 18. myself posted: 01.24.2012 - 2:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 17. The car stalled and it took long enough to get it re-fired that Earnhardt and Waltrip were able to get by. 21. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 07.19.2014 - 8:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: Lap 2-14: #12,29,31,46,64,71,74,76,78 accident turn 4 Caution 2: Lap 66-68: #44 engine failure 22. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 07.19.2014 - 8:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Correction Caution 1 occured from laps 3-14 and Caution 2 occured from laps 65-68 23. Allison made sure Earnhardt was by waltrip and then dropped out of the way. Right or wrong, sports were much more interesting when we had those kind of rivalries. Those guys hated each other, down to the point where, when choosing a new number after Gatorade took the #88 with them to Cliff Stuart's team, Allison settled on 22 because it was "twice as good as 11." 25. awesomebillfan9 posted: 11.15.2015 - 11:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Terry Labonte also relieved Kyle Petty in the race. The #52 car did not raced at Talladega, had Lenny Pond as driver for the next race (Michigan) then Means was back at the wheel for the Bristol event 2 race later (but relieved by Pond during the race). 28. joseph scott posted: 04.25.2018 - 10:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) every driver from that era would have done what Bobby did to their primary championship rival. and every driver from that era would griped about it if they were the championship rival it got done to. 29. This is both hilarious and a great move when you are sponsored by Old Milwaukee. 30. Adcox blasted the outside wall head on in the pile up. 31. Brandon posted: 05.22.2019 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wayne Peterson says Lennie Pond DNQ'd this race driving for him. 32. Jim4Bill posted: 07.21.2020 - 1:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) On the final green flag pit stop Bill Elliott had been running with the leaders all day - he pitted with Petty - both lost the lead draft. Waltrip took fuel only and Bonnett sputtered on low gas so he came out 3rd. Earnhardt had the best car left in the race - ran down Waltrip and passed for the win. Elliott had to come back in for left side tires after the final stops and finished a lap down (they don't explain why Bill had to come back - but I assume a cut or equalized tire). Only car that was as fast as Dale was Cale but he blew up just past half way. 35. It was the exact same car that Ricky Rudd was driving in the Busch Clash when he ended up in his infamous blowover wreck. 36.
