The DiGard team chiseled a vent hole in the roof of Bobby Allison's car
to cool him off. NASCAR fined the team $500.

I remember it was a very BIG hole and boy was it hot that day.
I was sittting on the 4th turn in the Robert E Lee paddock.

Bill Elliott's last second place finish before he would finally get that
elusive first win a few weeks later at Riverside.

This was Bobby Allison's fourth and final Southern 500 win and his first
since 1975. The Lady in Black wasn't too tough for Allison to tame as he
won here five times in Cup series action.
