Big E was a past champion (1980), but had not done great since then (3 wins, to Rudd's 2), and Rudd looked like a real up and comer. Allison raced at Martinsville 44 times over the course of his Cup career but despite 17 top-5s and 28 top-10s at this track he was never able to unlock the gate to victory lane and get one of the grandfather clocks here. 11.
