Neil hot rotted by D.W. on the last lap of the race and declared him the winner, but they gave D.W. the win back. That's how they came up w/ "Unofficial Results." 2. Mike Lindeen posted: 11.08.2004 - 3:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just a full explanation. Caution came out with one lap to go when Kyle Petty and Dave Marcis got tangled up. At the time of the caution, Waltrip was ahead. But, by the time that the white and yellow flag came out to signal one to go, Bonnett had passed DW. Now under the rules of 2004, DW would be the winner. But these were the days when you could race back to the caution, so Neil should've gotten the win. Initially, they gave it to Neil but then changed their minds. Why, we'll never know. 3. Bud Talley posted: 01.01.2006 - 12:37 am Rate this comment: (4) (0) That's not right. Waltrip was still leading when they crossed the line with the white/yellow waving. Bonnett passed him AFTER they crossed the line with one lap to go. NASCAR did the right thing...Darrell Waltrip was rightfully declared the winner! 4. myself posted: 02.14.2007 - 8:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You know, maybe those idiots shouldn't have painted those cars EXACTLY LIKE one another! One couldn't tell em' apart. They, thankfully, made adjustments to em' in 85' & 86'. 5. Dan posted: 03.31.2007 - 11:27 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Bud is correct. Neil passed Darrell in turn 1 after Darrell had taken the yellow flag. Since it was the last lap, the pace car didn't have time to pick the leaders up after they had taken the yellow so Neil thought he had won. NASCAR did do the right thing. 6. myself posted: 02.21.2008 - 12:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It was also very obvious that Junior was on Darrell's side in the argument. 7. One of the nicest guys in racing I've ever met. 12. myself posted: 05.18.2010 - 1:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Anyone else ever noticed how Junior Johnson's cars in 1984 had a very traditional "Wood Brotherish" paint scheme? 13. His car had a green-and-red paint job that was identical to Richard Petty's blue-and-red one...odd because being a Chrysler it couldn't have been one of the King's castoffs without at least being rebodied. 17. They also try and explain in detail just how they came up with the result. 18. Jaws_Fan posted: 02.10.2016 - 10:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) NASCAR has always had a rule that states a driver is prohibited from taking the lead on the final lap if the caution flag is displayed. After review NASCAR found DW had just crossed the line entering the final lap when Neil took the lead. 19. That's why they took on the wood brothers/RAHMOC tradiation all paint scheme. when Hodgson ended his part of the relatiobship, the color schemes became more individualized. 21. John Lee Pettimore III posted: 12.19.2018 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) DW was leading Bonnett by at least 4 car lengths taking the white and yellow. Bonnett passed DW just before the line at the checkered flag, UNDER YELLOW!!! You can pass a car coming to the yellow. You cannot pass a car after the yellow. Cut and dried - DW won the race. 22. RaceFanX posted: 10.23.2019 - 9:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The prize for winning this race was a custom guitar, like it usually was at Nashville. Bonnett initially received it since he was the one who celebrated in victory lane but after the win was switched to DW Waltrip let him keep it anyway telling his teammate he just wanted credit for his rightfully earned victory. This would be Darrell's eighth and final Cup win at his home track here in Nashville and his fifth over the course of six races since mid-1981. 23. Anonymous posted: 11.22.2020 - 4:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Benny reads the rule book after the race. If the caution comes out "during" the last lap, drivers are scored on basis of position in which they cross the finish line after receiving the checkered flag. The caution came out "before" the last lap. Darrell was leading at the white / caution flag. Darrell is the winner. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
