Benny Parsons actually ran for Bonnett after the first lap due to
fractured wrist for Neil.

Poor ole' Neil....boy must've been made out of glass. He seemed to have
more injuries that knocked him out of races than anyone!

Rusty Wallace runs his first NASCAR Cup road course race, qualifying and
running mid-pack. Despite this humble start the then-reigning ASA
champion would go on to win six road course races throughout his career
with wins here at Riverside and later schedule additions Watkins Glen
and Sonoma.

Texas Terry Labonte picks up the first of his two career NASCAR Cup road
course victories with a dominant victory from the pole here at
Riverside. Labonte's car owner Billy Hagan had a road racing team at the
time and Terry took advantage of that by sharpening his road course
skills co-driving a Chevrolet Camaro with Hagan and Gene Felton in both
the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring earlier in the year
to prepare for this race, looks like his extracurricular activity behind
the wheel paid off well as he not only won this race but scored GTO
class wins at both of those Floridian endurance classics. This was the
first of two wins for Labonte on his way to the 1984 Cup championship.

Driver Change - Benny Parsons handled qualifying for Neil Bonnett as
well as driving most of the race for him.
