He was dominate early on in the going but as he was leading and coming to a restart, Waltrip suddenly dropped onto pit road and the team began to work on the back end of the car. He lost 87 laps in the process. A similar situation happened with Geoff Bodine. Bodine was strong for a while in the race as well and was running second to Labonte late in the going when he darted off to pit road and had issues with a rear end, ending his day. Bristol was repaved again prior to this race and they had to drag a tire to get rubber in the racing surface as teams who tested there complained about the lack of grip. There was really no talk of lack of grip throughout the race just that the attrition rate was extremely high. Bill Elliott's first spin of the day heavily damaged his Ford Thunderbird when he spun in Tommy Gale's water after Gale's car was overheating and water was overflowing in his car. Elliott spun again late in the race but still finished sixth. Harry Gant spun twice as well including a spin with 5 to go but there was no caution. Gant brought his car down pit road but his team told him to continue. Also during the race they talked to Kyle Petty about leaving Petty Enterprises. Petty confirmed he was in fact leaving the organization run by his grandfather and uncle and rumors had him heading to the Wood Brothers. Petty told Barney Hall that he was "close" to a deal with the Wood Brothers but nothing was official. 11. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 04.26.2015 - 9:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: Lap 12-14: #7 accident frontstretch Caution 2: Lap 82-86: #9 accident turn 4 Caution 3: Lap 109-112: #95 accident turn 4 Caution 4: Lap 114-122: #4,7,17,33,47,51,67,98 accident turn 1 Caution 5: Lap 165-169: #33 accident turn 4 Caution 6: Lap 190-192: #43 spun frontstretch Caution 7: Lap 231-235: ambulance Caution 8: Lap 257-266: #66 accident turn 4 Caution 9: Lap 269-272: #27 accident turn 2 Caution 10: Lap 275-279: #15,33,43,44,51,95 accident turn 1 Caution 11: Lap 350-358: #3 accident turn 4 Caution 12: Lap 369-373: #12 accident backstretch 12. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 04.26.2015 - 9:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Correction caution 10 was from 275-278 13. I had always heard the 1st full race broadcast was the 1979 Daytona 500 & the 1st full season broadcast was the 1989 season. 17. RaceFanX posted: 12.10.2016 - 11:55 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The late 1980s saw all NASCAR Winston Cup races broadcast in some form but a lot of races were only aired on tape delay, syndicated sports broadcaster Mizlou aired a lot of races like that and TNN did the same for a few Cup races on its motorsports focused show "American Sports Cavalcade." The 1989 season was the first season where all the races were aired live with ESPN, TNN, CBS, ABC, and TBS all airing Cup races live in the early 1990s. 18. JSPorts posted: 12.10.2016 - 12:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Oh, ok. Thanks for the explanation. I guess I hadn't thought of tape-delay, but I believe they even still use that format for 1-2 truck races a year, at least up until a few years ago (I think the Dover race was.) 19. stricklinfan82 posted: 12.10.2016 - 4:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, 1989 was the first year every Cup points race was televised flag-to-flag but 1994 was the first year that every race was televised live. From '89 to '93 ESPN tape-delayed the race that conflicted with the NFL Draft (either the spring North Wilkesboro or Martinsville race) and a few other races were also tape-delayed during that span for various reasons. 20. dennyfan11 posted: 12.10.2016 - 5:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, in 1995, the Hanes 500 wasn't televised live, due to the draft, and in 1996 the DieHard 500 was tape-delayed after a 4 hour rain delay. 1997 and on all races have been televised live, flag to flag. 21. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 11.10.2017 - 6:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This pretty much seems to be the race that started the trend of Bristol races being real crashfests-starting from this race onwards up until the track was redone in '07, it was far more common to see Bristol races with upwards of 10 yellow flags than it was to see them with less. 25. RaceFanX posted: 01.08.2020 - 10:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Texas Terry Labonte's win here had serious championship implications. Labonte came into this race trailing Dale Earnhardt by 36 points in the title fight but after old Ironhead crashed and finished a distant tenth Corpus Christi's favorite son was able to swing past him into the points lead using this victory. Labonte would not surrender the points lead again all season on the way to his first Cup title. 26. Corey posted: 01.08.2020 - 12:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Q: How was your day? They used to set up one or two cameras at tracks and get video for weekly highlight shows like ESPN's Speedweek or TBS's Motorweek Illustrated. There is some video from this race but it wasn't a TV broadcast. Here are the highlights of this race shown on Speedweek: https://youtu.be/Rl_TYOCKGIE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
