This is the race where Benny talked about it being cloudy and he was
about to lap the field...then the sun came out and Bill's car came in,
and Bill almost lapped the field to win.

I was at this race. infield first turn. I was 10. when Ken Ragan's tire
blew in the turn 4 incident that effectively ended waltrip's day and
championship hopes, we could hear it all the way in turn 1.

In a publictiy stunt for Skoal, Hal Needham hired a friend who was a
Shakespearean-trained actor to dress up as a voodoo doctor and walk
around the garage putting curses on competitors' cars. NASCAR wasn't
amused.

Benny Parsons won $44,000 for his pole position ($17,000 in cash + Ford
Bronco + Ford Ranger). Johnny Hayes decided that Benny would get Bronco,
his crew chief Cliff Champpion the pickup, and also he was going to buy
another Bronco himself for team manager Leo Jackson. Benny split $17K
among his crew members.
