He finished 2nd to Harry Gant, one lap down after leading 163 laps. He never got any kind of break into Winston Cup, though his resume and his Martinsville performance should have caught the attention of Winston Cup car owners. Two months later he competed in an All Pro Series race at DeSoto Speedway in Bradenton, FL. He was leading very late in the race when a part broke and sent him into a spin in Turn 1. He hit the wall "flush"; with the front and rear hitting the wall simultaneously, much like Jerry Nadeau's 2003 crash at Richmond. His helmet smacked the wall and put him into a coma. He died 5 years later. If a Winston Cup car owner had hired him and given him a chance, he would probably not have died, and he certainly would not have had to compete in such a minor race. 6. I don't think Lindley or any of the other competitors considering the all-pro late model series races "minor". Back in those days you didn't have to make it to the cup series to make decent money and be considered a decent driver. 13. Watching the tribute episode of 'Winners', a TNN program that featured Neil as host, Mike Joy in narration noted that Bonnett found out two days post-wreck he broke his neck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ36iXY6PcQ About 17:30 in. 14. Just looking at the lap leader rundown it seems he had a shot at Earnhardt but wound a lap down after leading with 14 to go. 21. NewGuyOnTheBlock posted: 04.09.2020 - 11:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Earnhardt actually was involved in a crash on pit road during the third caution period. Terry Labonte had the last pit stall and had to enter at a weird angle due to the traffic on pit road. Earnhardt rammed into the back of Labonte, damaging his front end pretty severely. Due to the controversial pit stop rules for 1985 (you could only change 2 tires under caution), Earnhardt's team couldn't change the tires that were in the damaged area. Luckily, a caution came out just a few laps after the restart, enabling Earnhardt's team to change the tires and fix the damage. Considering he would go on to win the race itself, I would say this is one of Earnhardt's greatest comebacks. 22. Newspaper sources confirm this and I got a pretty decent look at the car in YouTube footage. Also there is a photo of the car at Bristol a few races later. 23. On the final restart, he had a tire go down and had to pit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
