Darrell Waltrip claims the pace car picked up the wrong car (Earnhardt) during a late caution when it should have been him. 3. b4il3y posted: 02.19.2008 - 10:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) If I remember correctly, this was the race Earnhardt lost his power steering, and still held off Tim Richmond for the win. Bristol isn't the place I'd choose to lose my power steering at. 4. In order to pull this off they had to bring in special lights in order to make the cars look good on television. The lights were so bright that they did not even have the normal backstretch lights on. Also the race start was delayed a little by rain and the race started under a green yellow. 5. He wanted to win the first night race as well. He didn't want anyone stealing his thunder. Elliott did the same to Waltrip. Earnhardt took care of business the following year, however, and DW never was a real threat to win a title ever again. btw, another battle between Earnhardt and Richmond. It seemed that Earnhardt got the better of him. People talk about Earnhardt like Richmond would eventually get him and win a title or two. No way. Too wreckless on and unfortunately off the track. 8. Richmond got shut out of victory lane in 1985 but after leaving the Blue Max #27, this would be Richmond's last top-5 finish with the Raymond Beadle-owned Pontiac team, for Rick Hendrick's #25 he would start making up for lost time in that area in 1986. 12. IIRC ESPN sent officials to the track before this race to measure the lighting available in preparation for the broadcast. When their light measuring equipment outright failed to get a reading because the track lights on their own still left conditions too dark they went and got the special lights to make everything look good. 17.
