For whatever reason, Speed was replaced by Jody Ridley even though Speed started off the season well with two top ten finishes and an eighth place standings in the points up to this point. 2. The driver of the other car immediately realized what he'd done after having caused the wreck turning left suddenly. Morgan wasn't too worried by it and it clearly didn't affect his driving. In the race itself Shepherd first had to hold off Dale Earnhardt then later Bill Elliott. After some pit miscues eliminated Bill from contention Earnhardt was right back on his tail in the closing laps but Shepherd held him off. The Cup series had a two-week break after this race, several used their time off to compete in the 1986 12 Hours of Sebring the following week. That race is on YouTube and at the start of Part 6 there are highlights of this one. 7. They said that Phil Parsons was Benny Parsons' SON and that Doug HEVERSON had brought out a caution, among other things. 12. Willy T Ribbs was supposed to drive a Ford for DiGard racing and attempt to make his first NASCAR race. But the team had issues getting the car to the track and they had to delay his debut. Ken Ragan's team couldn't get their car to the qualifying line in time and NASCAR wouldn't let them qualify for the race. Derrike Cope was originally going to attempt this race in a Ford but for some unknown reason they decided to skip this race. 13. Ken Ragan (as noted in post 12), Davey Allison, Jonathan Edwards and JD McDuffie didn't make qualifying runs. Bobby Hillin also missed qualifying and took a provisional, as did Tommy Ellis who was disqualified after qualifying 18th when NASCAR found technical irregularities. Bierschwale did start the race in the #54 qualified by Slick Johnson. Slick jumped in the car at the first caution and picked up a foot injury when it crashed out. 22.
