He had wrecked in a practice session, and NASCAR, for reasons only they and Heaven knew, wouldn't let him bring in a backup. Hence, he drove for Ulrich in this race. 5. I'm curious about Cale's run in it. He never won the 600 (only jewel missing), but led the most laps this day & finished 3rd & on the lead lap. Curious. 10. Also, after winning this race, Dale would go 15 races without winning again until they got to Charlotte for the 500 miler. 17. Speed, who also ran the non-points Atlanta Invitational for the team two weeks earlier, turned in a pretty solid run as he led a few laps and brought the car home with a top-15 finish. This was his first points race after RahMoc dismissed him earlier in the year and it would be his last Cup start of 1986 before he returned the following season as owner-driver. 26. Harry Gant qualified in 8th but found himself in the lead by lap 3, shooting around polesitter Geoff Bodine. Following a quick caution for Ken Ragan's crash, Gant and outside polesitter Tim Richmond pulled away from the field; the two would dominate the first 100 laps of the race. Richmond got around Gant for the lead on lap 26, while further back in the field, Joe Ruttman collided with Alan Kulwicki and Busch Series regular Brad Teague, bringing out the second caution of the day. Gant and Richmond continued to dominate up front over the next 50 laps, trading the lead twice. Following a round of green-flag pitstops, Richmond came out as the leader by a wide margin. Eddie Bierschwale and Connie Saylor crashed a few laps after the 1/4-mark, bringing out the third yellow of the day. Morgan Shepherd opted to stay out during the caution and led the field back to green. Richmond was able to get around Shepherd just as Phil Parsons spun to bring out another caution. Chet Fillip crashed on the restart, bringing out the fifth caution and bringing to field to pit road. Lake Speed brought the field back to green, only to immediately get swallowed up by Bill Elliott and Darrell Waltrip. As the top two ran side-by-side, Tim Richmond shot past on the inside to retake the lead, quickly gapping the field. A furious battle for second broke out between Waltrip, Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, and Rusty Wallace. However, it was Cale Yarborough that would come out in second after rocketing around the outside. Using the outside line, Yarborough was able to close the gap and eventually pass Richmond for the lead. Yarborough continued to stretch his advantage while green-flag pitstops began. Yarborough pit just before halfway, handing the lead to Harry Gant. With a $5,000 bonus for the driver who was in the lead at the halfway point on the line, Gant, Morgan Shepherd, and Rusty Wallace began a ferocious battle for the lead. Gant came in after leading a lap, while Wallace and Shepherd fought through lapped traffic. Just two laps before halfway, Wallace suddenly slowed; he had run out of fuel. As Wallace limped around to the pits, Shepherd slowed his pace and crossed the line to pick up the halfway bonus before diving into the pits. Yarborough cycled out as the leader with nobody else in the same timezone. Tim Richmond followed several seconds behind while Bill Elliott and Harry Gant battled for third nearly half a lap behind the #28. Yarborough continued to steadily pull away from Richmond, though he struggled to pass the lapped car of Morgan Shepherd. Yarborough retained the lead through another cycle of green-flag pitstops, with Richmond and Gant briefly taking turns at the point. Light rain brought out the sixth caution of the day on lap 267, ending what had been a 133-lap green-flag run. The leaders hit the pits under the yellow, with Bill Elliott inheriting the top spot. The complexion of the track appeared to have changed due to the rain: While he had previously been able to slice through the field, Cale Yarborough found himself struggling to clear traffic. Elliott, on the other hand, opened up a massive lead on the restart. With 100 laps to go, Elliott was well ahead of the rest of the field. Yarborough had moved his way back up into the top 5, but his car was not handling as it had earlier in the race. Up to this point, Dale Earnhardt had been running in the top 10 for much of the race but had never challenged for the lead. Suddenly, he came alive. Earnhardt quickly dispatched Morgan Shepherd for third, then slingshotted past Tim Richmond for second place. Elliott still held a massive lead, but Earnhardt began to cut into it, using the high line that had been so dominant throughout the race. In less than 30 laps, Earnhardt had caught and passed Elliott for the lead. Green-flag pitstops began around lap 330, with Elliott diving into the pits after losing the lead to Earnhardt. Big E had radioed his crew to tell them that he believed the Elliott had lost a cylinder, and that now was the time to strike. Stretching his fuel, Earnhardt finally pitted 10 laps after Elliott. This would prove to be crucial for the finish. Tim Richmond, Darrell Waltrip, and Harry Gant each took a turn at the point before Elliott cycled out as the race leader, Earnhardt and Richmond close behind. Shortly after the pitstop cycle, Phil Parsons and Alan Kulwicki made contact on the backstretch. Kulwicki was turned nearly head-on into the wall, yet was able to save the car and get down off the track. No caution was thrown as Kulwicki limped into the pits. Had there been a yellow, Bill Elliott may have been the biggest beneficiary; the leader was short on fuel. Earnhardt and Richmond closed in on Elliott, who was desperately trying to save fuel(The Ford's had notoriously poor fuel mileage). With 15 laps to go, Elliott was forced into the pits for a splash-and-go stop. Earnhardt grabbed the lead and never looked back, scoring his third win of the season. Tim Richmond grabbed his second runner-up finish of the year, while Cale Yarborough scored his best finish of the season in third. Harry Gant and Darrell Waltrip completed the top 5 while Elliott fell to 6th, the last car on the lead lap. Sterling Marlin surprised many with a 7th-place finish, while Ricky Rudd, Morgan Shepherd, and Rusty Wallace completed the top 10. 29.
